selena1971年4月16日出生于美国得克萨斯州。她的父亲是一位墨西哥籍美国人，在selena出生之前他就已经是los dinos乐队的一名成员。在selena十岁时，父亲成为她的第一个经纪人，1983年los dinos乐队为她录制了第一首歌曲。 虽然出生在英语国家，但是Selena 绝大部分歌曲都为拉丁风格，并且用墨西哥式西班牙语进行演唱的。Selena 曾经为拉丁歌曲创造了无数辉煌和奇迹。

80年代，selena嫁给了los dinos乐队的吉他手chris perez，这个乐队的另外两位成员是selena的兄妹，为她录制了许多歌曲。1987年selena获得本年度最佳女歌手奖和最佳表演奖。在1990年她和eni公司签定了合约，与los dinos乐队合作发行了最新专辑。在1993年selena和乐队获得了葛莱美最佳表演奖，同年发行了另一张爱情歌曲辑，同时开设了一家时装公司。1994年，selena出演了第一部电影《don juan demarco》，在影片中饰演一位女歌手。年末发行了专辑《amor prohibido》，这张专辑获得了葛莱美金奖。

1995年3月31日，这天当她来到corpus christi的一个旅店的时候，与一位34岁名叫yolanda saldivar的人发生争执。这个人曾经组织过selena的歌迷俱乐部，前几天selena的父亲曾写信证明yolanda saldivar贪污歌迷俱乐部的钱。selena被此人开枪打中后背，但她没有立即死亡，跑出大厅喊到“yolanda saldivar是杀人犯”。一个小时后selena死在医院中。yolanda saldivar被判入狱30年。 selena的死在拉丁乐坛引起了巨大的反响，在洛杉机selena曾经演出过的地方举行了一场纪念她的音乐会，德克萨斯州州长george w. bush宣布4月16日为“selena”日。

Selena的生命是短暂的，可她在音乐上取得的成功却是令人不可思议：6首单曲及三张专辑名列美国榜榜首，并获金唱片、白唱片奖，她的唱片总销量已达400万张。

Selena被誉为是“Tex Mex”女王。“Tex Mex”取自于两个词的第一个音节：“Texas”为美国南部的一个州的州名，而“Mex”则代表墨西哥。“Tex Mex”指的是一种以墨西哥北部特有的音乐节奏为基础，吸收了美国音乐中的某些元素的音乐作品。在“Tex Mex”演出中，表演者穿戴着具有墨西哥北部风味的牛仔帽、鹿皮夹克和有角靴子，这些歌曲的主题大多为爱情和反叛。在“Tex Mex”演出现场，艺人会和观众在巨大会场里融为一体，他们一起载歌载舞，使演出气氛达到炽热化的高潮。
