Cyndi Lauper 是早期MTV时代的超级巨星之一，她那清脆的少女嗓音和无忧无虑的快乐形象，成为 80 年代初最具有特色的形象之一，是众多时尚女孩纷纷仿效的对象。在她的音乐中，则包括了新浪潮、后朋克、雷鬼音乐、流行歌曲和放克音乐。可以说 Cindy Lauper 的音乐和言行，都促进了朋克新浪潮在美国流行音乐中的融合。
1986 年 Cyndi Lauper 推出了第二张专辑《True Colors》，为她赢得了巨大的成功，同名主题歌更是高居榜首，专辑则名列排行榜的第 4 并获得白金销量。但有得必有失，Cyndi Lauper 在这张专辑中尝试转变的成熟而松弛舒适的嗓音，也令她失去了一部分歌迷。
如许多经典好歌百唱不厌一样，“True Colors”这首歌曲也成了众多歌星翻唱的目标，其中就包括乐坛经典人物 Phil Collins，与 Cindy Lauper 略带野性，摇滚的味道的演唱相比，Phili Collins 的演绎则显得柔情万种。
国内的万芳也翻唱过此歌。而且这首歌也是电影无间道的配乐。
